The Science behind Marijuana THC and CBD

Out of the many components found in cannabis plants, people tend to give a lot of attention to the two main components in these weeds which play an important role in its stone effects in the body when smoked. These two components are known to THC and CBD in which both are responsible for the effect of smoking weeds.

Upon purchasing strain, buyers would always look first how much THC it contains. While people’s attention is caught up by THC levels when talking about marijuana strains, effects of CBD are now also acknowledged by potential consumers. Both are responsible for the potency of the strains.  But, how does these two really work?

What are THC and CBD?

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) belongs to a unique family of compounds. These are known as cannabinoids and can be largely found in marijuana strains. CBD is actually an isomer of THC and yes, they both have the same chemical composition but different atomic structures. It differs on one of the rings found in the structure. When all three rings are close, it is known as THC otherwise when the middle ring is open it is known as the CBD. Both can be altered when treated with a significant amount of acids. THC can be formed when CBD is reacted with an acid and vice versa. However, this two have an exactly opposite function when talking about potency and effects on the body.

THC

When one wishes to experience that high effect, try looking for the marijuana strain with high THC level. It is best known as the psychoactive component of these cannabis plants. THC is thought to have positive effects on our brain cells. It is considered to be neuroprotectant which protects damaged brain cells. THC is said to have the same behavior as anandamide, a chemical which is naturally produced by the brain.  It is the component which gives a relaxing and euphoric effect.

When smoking weeds, THC reaches the brain and it rapidly attaches to CB (cannabinoid) receptors. The EC (endocannabinoid) system, which can be found on the brain, reacts with the incoming information. However, THC overwhelms this system.  THC prevents it to work properly. Thus, making the whole system out of balance.

CBD

On the other hand, CBD works the exact opposite of THC. It is the non-psychoactive ingredient of marijuana pots. It tends to give you awareness when you feel high upon smoking. As THC excites the EC system, CBD has a lesser binding affinity to either CB1 or CB2 receptors. When there is less anandamide, CBD opposes the activity of CB1 receptors resulting in the muting of the psycho activeness of THC.

THC and CBD amounts vary depending on the strain. It is better to look for a strain which suits the quality you are looking after as their genes have the responsibility to it. Besides, it will be all up to you whichever you pick as long your body can handle the effects of these two powerful components.
