Chocolate-Like Chemicals in Marijuana: The Reason Why We Crave For It

For many people, chocolate is known as a “feel good” food. Chocolate eaters are usually experiencing some kind of lift which can be accounted to the various chemicals present in it. Although a lot of people do not know it, chocolate can be more than just a feel good food. The pharmacologically active substances that are said to be marijuana-like may be responsible why we crave for it in almost the same way why we crave marijuana.

A current paper shows that people have been eating chocolates several years ago for medicinal purposes, as well as for pleasure. On the other hand, medical marijuana users crave for cannabis because of its health benefits, aside from the fact that marijuana is good for recreational purposes because of the uplifting high it can produce.

THC, CBD and other chemicals are the reason why we crave marijuana. Chocolate is found to contain Anandamide in the year 1996. Anandamide is a type of neurotransmitter (naturally produced in the brain and the human body) that can make you feel good longer but it is not the only chemcial present in chocolate that mimics the action and the effects of cannabinoids, a substance present in weed and one of the reasons why we crave marijuana. Medical marijuana refers to the use of weed and its active substances CBD and THC as treatment to various illnesses. Just like the consumption of chocolates, the use of medical marijuana dated back hundreds of years ago.

Chocolates and marijuana have similarities. Just like cannabis, chocolates were once blamed for some diseases affecting the health of people. This is according to the findings presented during the International Congress on the History of Science, Technology and Medicine 2013 held at the University of Manchester. Also, in the late 1700’s, the doctors in Mexico started to see chocolates as food that can cause harm to one’s health. This is despite the fact that cocoa beans have been used by the Aztecs as medicine in 14th century.

Scientist Dr. Daniele Piomelli said that cannabinoids identified in chocolates play a big part in the good feeling that comes from eating chocolates. The therapeutic effects of chocolates can also be accounted to cannabinoids. According to Dr. Piomelli, increasing the strength of cannabinoids may be one of the effective ways of treating some diseases. Similar to marijuana, chocolates are said to be good for the management of depression. Now, several companies came up with marijuana-infused chocolates.

Dark chocolates are found to contain 2 to 3 times amount of cannabinoids than milk chocolates. This could explain why chocolate lovers would crave more for dark and rich chocolates over their sugary equivalents even if price is quite higher.

Some people crave for chocolates because of that “good feeling.” Other than being a feel good food, chocolates (specifically the darker ones) are believed to be effective in the management of hypertension (high blood pressure). Consumption of this so-called “feel good food” will help boost a person’s cannabinoid system which is one good way of treating certain illnesses.
